On Shoes and Walking

ShoeI am a runner. I’ve run 4 marathons. I haven’t been running the last 2 years due to an inflamed Ilio-tibial band. And in that time, I’ve been consciously seeking out information about running form and shoes. You see, I have a low arch, which made it extremely painful for me to run any distance above a mile. This was until 8 years ago. Then I got foot inserts (orthotics), and as soon as I’d broken into the orthotics, I was able to run 7 miles. So, I’m well aware that the right foot accessories can make an immense difference. So it is that an article I read in the New York Magazine caught my attention. Read the rest of this entry »

Tankman, Redux?

Iran is front and center in all major new outlets these days. Iran has been the errant relative of the international community the last few decades, and has shot into prominence since George W Bush’s moronic invention of the ‘Axis of Evil’. Iran fared prominently in the last major international political event – the US Presidential Elections. John McCain chanted ‘bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran’, but thankfully, the majority of the US electorate saw that as completely unnecessary. Conservatives kept talking of Regime Change in Iran by hook or by crook, though, so now that Iran is showing signs of the same ‘by hook’, the US audience in particular and the international community in general, is understandably excited. I apparently live in a clean city!

The American Lung Association just came out with its 2009 State of the Air report. Many large metropolitan areas don’t fare well on the list – including places like San Diego, Kansas City, Cincinnati (!) and Charlotte (NC). Of course, New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas shouldn’t surprise anyone by making it to the list of most polluted cities. Read the rest of this entry »

Great Year in Movies

the_dark_knight062008 has to be one of the best years in movie history. Some years, there is hardly a movie worth the Oscar. This year, there were more than a handful. After watching The Dark Knight, I was sure it would win a Best Director for Chris Nolan. But along came Danny Boyle with Slumdog Millionaire and wiped Dark Knight off the nominations. In fact, there were so many good directorial efforts, Chris Nolan didn’t even get a nomination!
